Surface & Finish
A process of rhythm and control. As the wood rotates, the tool gradually reveals form, grain, and proportion. Each decision affects the final balance of the object.
Transforming flat sheets of metal into three-dimensional forms. The process relies on pressure, movement, and judgement, creating objects that hold the circular memory of how they were made.
Surface is where the object meets the hand. A finish can soften, protect, darken, or reveal the material beneath. We use surface carefully, allowing each object to retain a connection to its making.

The Mechanics of Spinning
Transforming flat sheets of metal into three-dimensional vessels through controlled pressure and rhythmic movement.

Choosing the right metal—aluminium, brass, or copper—based on the desired weight, durability, and finish.

The core of the process. Applying consistent pressure to the metal disc over a former to create the bowl's curve.

Refining the surface through polishing, brushing, or patination to reveal the material's character and beauty.

Refining the surface of the spun metal bowl to reveal the subtle marks of the forming process, creating a smooth, reflective finish that still carries a sense of how it was made.
Intentional chemical treatments that deepen the colour and add a unique, characterful layer to the metal.
The spun metal surface is sealed with Renaissance Wax to help protect the finish and slow the development of a natural patina. Where an intentional patina has been applied, the wax also helps protect the surface and reduce the risk of the patina flaking.
