Meet the Maker Joshua Gilding
Joshua Gilding is an emerging designer-maker working with woodturning, metal spinning and handmade objects.
His work is led by curiosity, practical testing and a hands-on understanding of materials. He is interested in how objects are formed, how different parts come together, and how traditional processes can be used in a contemporary way.
Joshua’s practice often starts with a question rather than a fixed outcome. He develops ideas through drawing, profile testing, material experiments and time in the workshop. This way of working allows the final pieces to grow from the process, rather than being forced into a design too early.
His current work explores objects that sit between function and display. They can be held, opened, changed and used, but they also ask people to notice how they are made.
Through form, surface, proportion and connection, Joshua creates pieces that feel considered, tactile and honest.
Turned & Spun
Turned and Spun is Joshua Gilding’s contemporary craft studio, creating small-batch and one-off objects through woodturning, metal spinning and careful hand finishing. The brand is built around honest making, material understanding and clear construction.
The name reflects the two heritage processes at the centre of the work. Wood is turned by hand to create warmth, grain and form, while metal is spun to create smooth, precise and reflective shapes. Joshua brings these processes together to create objects that feel contemporary while still showing the hand of the maker.
Turned and Spun is not about hiding how things are made. The joins, material differences and construction details are part of the work. Each piece is shaped through testing, refinement and practical decision-making, with attention given to how it feels, functions and sits as an object.
The studio’s work includes modular vessels, lamps and future commissions. As the brand develops, the aim is to create objects that are well made, meaningful and rooted in real craft process, without becoming over-polished or disconnected from the making.

By limiting production, Turned and Spun ensures each object receives the full attention of the maker and a high standard of care. Small differences in form, finish and material are part of the work, giving each piece its own character.
The work is guided by an understanding of form, balance and the physical act of making. Woodturning and metal spinning both require control, patience and accuracy, resulting in objects that feel functional, refined and carefully resolved.
